Saint Bernard, massive working dog; shoulder height, 25–29 in. (64–74 cm); weight, 140–170 lb (64–77 kg). There is a smooth-coated and a rough-coated variety, both in mixtures of white, red, and brindle. Bred (18th cent.) by monks of the Hospice of the St. Bernard Pass, in the Swiss Alps, for rescue and guide work, the breed was perfected in 19th-cent. England.

Dalmatian
A dog of a breed believed to have originated in Dalmatia, having a short, smooth white coat covered with black or dark brown spots.

Doberman pinscher
A medium-sized to large dog of a breed originating in Germany, having short hair and a smooth, usually dark brown or black coat.

dingo
